The Turnpike was created here, now with Billboards
Made up of the interstate highway system, the main route through Western Pennsylvania is the grandfather of the nation’s highway system I-76 “The Pennsylvania Turnpike.” This highway was the first long distance controlled access highway in the US. The other interstates that crisscross Western Pennsylvania are I-70, I-90, I-79, and I-80 which is the main route between New York and Chicago. I-70 is the main route from Baltimore, Washington DC, from the east, and Columbus, OH from the west. Along the routes in Western Pennsylvania are the major cities – Pittsburgh and Erie - as well as many recreational opportunities ranging from the ski resorts of the Laurel Highlands, to the shores of Lake Erie. Western Pennsylvania’s rich history makes it an area to explore and relive the past.
