Kansas City Royals have built excitement for their upcoming season with their out-of-home advertising campaign, titled “Come To Play.” Explore this case study in detail
The campaign features two exciting boards placed in the heart of downtown Kansas City; one on the east side of I-35 and the other on the west side.
The board on the east side features Royals’ pitcher James Shields throwing a fast ball in the direction of the west side board, which shows Royals’ catcher Salvador Perez preparing to catch it. The backing of the structure was removed during installation, allowing drivers to see where the ball ripped through it.
In an inspired design twist to highlight the speed and power of the pitch, the ball "rips" through the ad. To bring a fully authentic look to the board, the vinyl was torn away and made to look as if it was flapping in the wind.
The campaign was very popular and was picked up all over the news and was shared across social media. One headline even said "Kansas City Royals have the coolest billboard in baseball".
